Polypipe Civils & Green Urbanisation [Polypipe CGU] has supplied a range of products, including its Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system, Ridgidrain surface water drainage and cable protection solutions, to the first phase of a new inland port, developed by Verdion. The new logistics port will consist of over six million square feet of warehousing, a new access road to provide direct access from the M18 and a dedicated new 35-acre-on-site rail freight terminal.

Working alongside main contractor Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd [BCGL] and consulting engineer BWB, Polypipe CGU were able to produce an alternative infrastructure drainage system utilising Ridgistorm-XL in sizes 750mm and 1500mm for the conveyance and attenuation of stormwater at the site, in replacement of a previous design consisting of soft SuDS, which took up vital development land.

Taking advantage of the high-quality engineering fill that was readily available, the Polypipe CGU team worked closely with Buckingham Group and BWB Consulting to calculate specific structural requirements. The Ridgistorm-XL pipes were then manufactured specifically for the stiffness classification required by on-site ground conditions and loading considerations. The system also incorporated pre-fabricated RidgistormAccess Multiple Pipe Manholes, which allow for inspection access and connecting dual runs of pipe.

From initial design meetings to final design, approval, manufacture and delivery, Polypipe CGU was able to pre-fabricate and supply Ridgistorm-XL within a two-week timeframe. The business’s fabrication abilities provide significant reductions in cost, time and on-site labour compared to traditional concrete pipe systems and manholes.

Alongside Ridgistorm-XL, Polypipe CGU also supplied its BBA HAPAS approved Ridgidrain surface water drainage piping system, as well as Ridgigullys and Ridgiflex. The project also used Ridgiduct Power, Ridgiduct Lighting and Ridgiduct Power HV to complete basic infrastructure requirements.

Adam Smith, Project Manager at Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd, said: “The initial designs we had did not make best use of the land available, which was of paramount importance to the client, Verdion. BGCL and BWB invited Polypipe CGU to provide a versatile drainage system that can efficiently replace the hydraulic function of the swales within a very short time frame. From our initial meeting to design, approval, manufacture and delivery, PolypipeCGU supplied its Ridgistorm-XL within two weeks, allowing us to hit the extremely tight schedule we were working towards.”
