Polypipe Civils & Green Urbanisation [Polypipe CGU] has demonstrated the many benefits of its wide range of rail solutions during the re-development of Loughborough Train Station in Leicestershire.

Working closely with the main contractor, Ringway, Polypipe CGU provided a holistic solution utilising its popular Polystorm modular cell system, Ridgidrain surface water drainage pipes and Ridgiduct cable protection products.

Polypipe CGU supplied its Polystorm modular cells for four separate attenuation and soakaway structures to be utilised under the station car park and non-trafficked landscaped areas. These structures were installed utilising Polystorm-R, Polystorm Xtra and Polystorm Lite modular cells according to their loading requirements.

“Our modular cell system was ideal for this project,” Emma Thompson, Marketing Communications Manager at Polypipe CGU, said, “As the project got underway it became apparent that an existing cable could not be moved and, as such, we redesigned one of the tanks to fit around the cabled area. Because our cells can fit together to make tanks of any shape or size, we were quickly able to overcome the problem without any delay in installation time.”

The project, which forms part of a multi-million-pound investment by Charnwood Borough Council to re-develop the area, also called for a bespoke distribution inlet for one of the Polystorm structures. A 600mm diameter pipe could not connect directly into one of the Polystorm structures, as this would affect the hydraulics, therefore Polypipe CGU designed and fabricated a one-piece pipe fitting from a four-metre length of 600mm pipe with 6 x 300mm and 1 x 225mm outlets.

Polypipe CGU’s Ridgiduct cable protection was used to provide robust protection for the site’s street lighting cables, plus CCTV, ticket machines and power cables.

“Our Ridgiduct twin wall systems have been manufactured to provide a lightweight, flexible and high-strength alternative to conventional cable protection. For this project, we supplied Ridgiduct Power, Ridgiduct Lighting and Ridgiduct Comms products to ensure that the cables were adequately protected,” Emma added.

“This project posed some interesting challenges for us, however, the flexibility and adaptability of our full range of products enables us to create bespoke applications to accommodate the site specific requirements of any project.”
