RAF Woodbridge was previously used as an Army Air Corps training base prior to the arrival of an engineer regiment from the Army’s rapid deployable force. In order to house the new unit, a redevelopment of the site was needed, including the construction of new roads and modular buildings for accommodation and general use over an area of several acres.
Polypipe CGU was approached to provide a solution to the issue of rainwater disposal on-site. To cope with drainage on such a large scale, Polypipe CGU recommended the use of its Polystorm modular soakaway system, installed underneath each new building.
Over 12,000 Polystorm cells were used, with a combined storage capacity in excess of 2 million litres.
In addition to its Polystorm soakaway solution, Polypipe CGU supplied structured wall Ridgidrain pipe in 225mm and 300mm diameters to drain excess surface water away from all hard standing sites. Ridgidrain has the advantage of being light in weight, yet exceptionally strong, due to its structured wall construction, offering increased benefits in transportation, storage and handling.
Cable protection was also supplied by Polypipe CGU for use in street lighting, CCTV cables and traffic signal applications. Ridgiduct Power, Ridgiduct Lighting and Ridgiduct Comms were all selected as the preferred choice by Skanska for their light, flexible, yet robust construction.
