Polypipe Civils & Green Urbanisation’s [Polypipe CGU] Permavoid has been installed in the Olympic Equestrian project, which is 32,000m² of temporary surfacing and engineered drainage, installed within a significant World Heritage Site.

Providing top level footing for Olympic Dressage and Showjumping competitions during the 2012 London Olympics, the surface needed to maintain a consistent level of moisture throughout the competition.

Greenwich Park, a World Heritage Site featuring protected trees and an enforced zero-dig policy, could have proven a tricky area to install the surface, however, utilising Polypipe CGU’s Permavoid geocellular system, the site was undisturbed and undamaged.

In equestrian sport, the moisture content of the sand fibre surface is critical. The ability to install equestrian surfacing directly onto Permavoid allowed the surface to be well-irrigated, maintaining the optimum moisture content without flooding, and, during dry periods, Polypipe CGU Capillary Cones within the sub-base were used to replenish soil moisture to maintain the desired soil moisture content, without the need for surface irrigation techniques.
